The largest talent show in Europe, the X Factor was devised by Simon Cowell who owned the television rights to the programme and therefore the potential to make vast amount of money and of course personal kudos.
The first show took place in 2004 and it was designed to take over from the hugely successful “Pop Idol”, which, at the time was the most popular T.V. program.
It was a talent show for aspiring pop singers, the “X” in the title referring to the “extra quality” required by contestants if they were to succeed in the “cut-throat” music industry, revealing whether or not they were potential starts.
Public auditions were held for contestants, spurred on by thoughts of the prize of a £1,000,000 recording contract.
Initially, contestants sang in front of a panel of judges, without music, and, after a series of selection processes they hoped to get through to the “boot camp” from which they could progress through the competition.
A huge amount of pleasure was had by the viewers who enjoyed watching less able contestants making a fool of themselves with bizarre performance.
The original panel of judges was Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne and much of the fun for audience was in listening to them squabbling. Although funny, their disagreements were frequently aggressive and eventually led to Sharon Osbourne leaving the show in frustration. This was a great disappointment to many viewers as she was so popular.
The format of the show gradually evolved. Three judges became four, Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole.
As the audition process progressed, successful candidates were assigned to a “mentor” for particular categories, Boys, Girls, Over 25s and Groups.
Each mentor tried to encourage those in their group and each group of six was gradually reduced to three by a process of elimination, only the best remaining.
The remaining twelve contestants then went through to live finals, from which, on a weekly basis, weaker individuals were eliminated by public telephone voting.
Up to now, there have been five winners:
Steve Brookstein
Shayne Ward
Leona Lewis
Leon Jackson
Alexandra Burke
The winner’s first single is usually released in time for Christmas market in the hope of being the UK’s Christmas No.1
Although each contestant really wants to be the winner we must remember that many of the “runners up” have also done extremely well and have secured extremely lucrative recording contracts. From the first series, G4, a classically trained group went on to great things. Ray Quinn, Phydian Roberts and group JLS have all achieved magnificent music careers.
An “off shoot” from the television show is the X Factor live tour which tours the UK and Ireland in the New Year. This features many memorable contestants from the show, not just the winners, and they are usually “sell off” concerts.
The present X Factor is slightly different to the earlier series but the changes have brought some criticism. This year, audiences have been held in front of a live audience with full backing tracks and many people feel lose the “sparkle” which the earlier series had.
Nevertheless, it remains an extremely popular showcase for talent and evokes tremendous emotion among the contestants who are frequently seen sobbing and regaling us with “sob stories” in an attempt to encourage us to vote for them. This is seen as an attempt to elicit a “sympathy vote”.

There is no doubt that the X Factor is one of the most popular TV shows of the Twenty First Century.
Its undeniable success has resulted in the show being presented throughout the world in similar format most notably in Denmark and the Netherland. This is a testimony to Simon Cowell who devised The X Factor six year ago.
